Piercing After Care

 

New piercing’s should be cleaned thoroughly twice a day.  This is very important!  A surgical scrub such as Bio-Cyde or Betadine is preferred.  If these products cause irritation, mild low pH soap can be used.  Soaps that contain deodorants, cold cream, strong perfumes, or other additives should be avoided.  Please note:  Do not use Betadine on Gold jewelry, as it will discolor it.

During the healing process, secretions from the piercing will dry on the jewelry and around the opening of the piercing.  Use warm water only to rinse this section of the jewelry and piercing.  Rinse the piercing thoroughly working the jewelry back and forth under running water to make certain that all traces of surgical scrub or soap are removed.  Remember, work the jewelry do not force the jewelry back and forth in the piercing.  Forcing the jewelry may reopen it and make it bleed.  This puts you back to the beginning of the healing process.  Under contrary beliefs you should not use Alcohol or peroxide on a healing piercing.

Sensitive Ears, ear care solution should be used on ear, nostrils septum and other above the neck piercing.  Do not use Bio-Cyde as it may cause deafness if it comes in contact with the inner ear.  For lip tongue, and cheek piercing, rinse with Listerine antiseptic any time you eat or drink anything with the exception of bottled water.   To aid the healing process, use Gly-Oxide twice a day on the piercing.  “Sensitive Ear” ear care solution should be used on the outside of the lip and cheek piercing two or three times a day.

During the first few days after the piercing or if signs of infection become apparent, An antibiotic ointment such as triple antibiotic or Mycitracin can be used.

As with healing of any sort, it has been medically proven a healthy diet rich in vitamins increases the healing processes.

Contact such as kissing and oral sex should be avoided to reduce infection in oral piercing.  Although genital piercing do not prohibit sex during the healing process, it is advised to abstain.  If you are having sex with genital piercing it is advised to promote good hygiene by wearing a condom during intercourse to minimize the risk of infection.

Any irritation should be avoided during the healing process.  If irritation via cloths, fingers, or bumping, accurse this could result in infection. 

Localized swelling, redness, tenderness, pain, abnormal discharge and fever may be signs and symptoms of infection.

After your piercing is healed you may remove the jewelry and change it out as you please.  Be sure to replace with clean jewelry.  The inside of any piercing is delicate due to its moist atmosphere.  This tissue can tear easily leading to infection.  Be sure to be careful when replacing jewelry.  Each piercing has different healing times.  Your “Piercer” should have discussed your healing time with you before you were pierced.  Be sure to note all information he/she gives you about your piercing.

Rejection is when the jewelry migrates to the surface, the skin opens , and the jewelry falls out .  Rejection of a piercing is common in many cases such as : the piercing is to shallow, excessively heavy jewelry, or has been constantly irritated. A piece of jewelry may be okay for years but do to stretching or irritation the body may begin to reject the jewelry.  Some areas of the body are more susceptible than others.  These areas are pubic, Nipples in males, Bridge of nose, Navels, Eyebrows, Throats, web of the hand, and most flat skin piercing.

Keloids are scars that look like a raised blister or pimple.  They may be red, inflamed, and itchy.  These appear at the entrance of a piercing. Constant irritation or movement may increase your risk of a keloid.  To avoid this you should try not to irritate the piercing or change the jewelry too early.  If keloid begins to appear apply vitamin E.

Tongue piercing should be rinsed at least 2 times daily, and every time you eat or drink anything.  The mixture of rinse should be 50% water and 50% Listerine.  Be sure to keep an eye on the piercing, making sure the jewelry is not pushing down into the mucus membrane too much.  If so, you may need a longer piece of jewelry.  Abstain from any forms or oral sex (i.e. French kissing too) for the first couple of weeks.

Healing times for body piercing will vary with the site.

Ear lobe 6 to 8 weeks
Ear cartilage 4 months to 1 year
Eyebrow 6 to 8 weeks
Nostril 2 to 4 months
Nasal septum 6 to 8 months
Nasal bridge 8 to 10 weeks
Tongue 4 weeks
Lip 2 to 3 months
Nipple 3 to 6 months
Navel 4 months to 1 year
Female genitalia 4 to 10 weeks
Male genitalia 4 weeks to 6 months
